Su suplencia en la competición liguera se debió a los tiras y aflojas con la directiva en torno a su renovación. Es un lateral con alma de carrilero, ya que en muchas ocasiones el equipo de García Pimienta opta por dejar toda la banda izquierda libre para él. Es habitual verle junto al interior o extremo que juega por delante de él para meterse hacia dentro con la función de liberar ese carril y explotar todas las cualidades del catalán al máximo. No es un lateral con finalización pero si con mucha llegada. Evidentemente, es uno de esos jugadores con más capacidad de asistir que de marcar. Este estilo de futbolista le viene bien a Pimienta para abrir el juego cuando el equipo rival se encuentra muy cerrado, ya que aprovecha muy bien los espacios.
Su labor defensiva también se puede argumentar con datos, ya que se lleva el top-1 en varios apartados defensivos de su equipo. ¿Cómo juega Sergi Cardona?
Sergi Cardona es espigado, tiene presencia en ambos lados del campo y aporta una profundidad enorme al equipo de García Pimienta. Es capaz de cubrir toda la largura del campo y mantener la intensidad durante todo el partido. El técnico barcelonés ha identificado esto y, por ello, es habitual ver que toda la banda izquierda la dejan para que el de Lloret de Mar cabalgue por ella.
Es asociativo, no comprende el fútbol sin un alto esfuerzo físico y ha entendido a la perfección como debe jugar para que la UD Las Palmas le saque todo el provecho posible.
