Nico Williams se une a la pequeña dinastía Williams que se está formando en San Mamés desde qué un 6 de diciembre de 2014, su hermano Iñaki Williams debutara en «El Botxo» ante el Córdoba. Siete años después, San Mamés viviría un momento familiar, el apellido Williams debutaba de nuevo, esta vez a la espalda de un chaval de 18 años. Un 28 de abril de 2021, Nico Williams se estrenaba con el primer equipo ante el Real Valladolid.
De esta manera, la historia de los hermanos Williams pasaba a un nuevo capítulo, en el que ambos compartirían vestuario en el equipo de sus sueños. Desde Rotxapea a Bilbao, los Williams han ilusionado a la afición rojiblanca, con su juego y con una bonita historia.
Nico Williams, la última irrupción en San Mamés
Tras pasar por la cantera de Osasuna, Nico Williams recalaría en el Athletic Club, donde llegaría a ser el futbolista que es hoy en día. Ha pasado con éxito por todas las categorías inferiores de los leones, desde cadetes hasta el Bilbao Athletic. Acompañando ese éxito con varias apariciones en la selección española sub-18 y sub-19.
Su gran «boom» llegó en el Athletic Juvenil, donde jugó 19 partidos y marcó 6 goles. Fue un rendimiento tan sorprendente que el club decidió ascenderlo al Basconia, donde tan solo jugaría 4 partidos, ya que fue ascendido aun siendo un juvenil.
Después de su gran curso tanto en el Athletic Juvenil como en el Basconia, el club decidió inscribirlo en las filas del Bilbao Athletic. La temporada 2020/21 no bajó su nivel, y en 26 partidos logró superar su récord goleador, embolsándose 9 goles. Unas actuaciones que llamaron la atención de Marcelino, que no dudó en convocarlo para varios partidos de La Liga.
El día 28 de abril de 2021 llegaría su recompensa, corría el minuto 62 en un San Mamés vacío por la pandemia. El cartelón del cuarto árbitro anunciaba el dorsal numero 30, la historia estaba escrita. Nico Williams saltó al campo y entró en los libros del Athletic Club, por primera vez en 35 años, dos hermanos jugaban juntos con el club rojiblanco.

Los hermanos, Iñaki y Nico Williams
35 años han pasado desde que dos hermanos vistieran la zamarra rojiblanca a la vez, desde los hermanos Salinas, Patxi y Julio, nadie lo había hecho. Ni los hermanos Aketxe ni los Karanka, tenían que ser los Williams.
Con una historia muy especial, contada en varias ocasiones por Iñaki, el mayor de los hermanos, merecían una recompensa así, entrar en la historia del Athletic Club por algo más que goles y asistencias. Ellos mismos han recalcado que el jugar juntos es un sueño cumplido y un orgullo, sienten los colores y no dudan en demostrarlo cada vez que tienen una ocasión.
Iñaki, tras vivir y compartir el debut de su hermano, no dudó en postear unas palabras en su Instagram, el 9 del Athletic decía lo siguiente ;
«Empezamos desde abajo y mira lo que estamos consiguiendo… Gracias a los viejos por darnos la oportunidad de cumplir nuestros sueños, porque todo pasa por algo y el destino es el destino. Ojalá el primero de muchos».
Lo que están consiguiendo hace referencia a una historia de superación, algo que llevan viviendo desde que son unos niños, son parte de una familia que nunca ha tenido las cosas fáciles, y así lo demuestran sus vivencias. Sus padres se marcharon de Ghana con el objetivo de buscar un lugar mejor, un lugar en el que poder formar una familia y darle un futuro. Llegaron hasta Bilbao gracias a una persona que les dio cobijo, de hecho, Iñaki lleva ese nombre en honor a dicha persona.
Una historia difícil que ha tenido un final feliz, una historia de dos hermanos con un sentimiento de pertenencia inigualable y que están dispuestos a darlo todo por unos colores.
¿Cómo juega el águila?
Nico Williams es ese estilo de jugador que tantos años lleva echando de menos el Athletic Club. Un extremo derecho puro, de los que gambetea con el balón y encara a su defensor sin un ápice de vergüenza, pícaro como el que más. Tiene 19 años hasta que le pasan el balón y comienza a correr con él, quizá le falte un poquito de madurez aún, y aunque a veces pueda excederse de confianza, sabe como levantar a la gente de sus asientos.
El apellido Williams siempre se ha asociado a velocidad, gracias al buen hacer de su hermano en este ámbito. Nico también cumple con ese aspecto, siendo una bala que se proyecta por banda.
Velocidad, regate y descaro son las tres palabras que definen al pequeño de los hermanos Williams, no duda en retar a su defensor, primero encara y si no puede superarlo, busca el pase. Posee una gran arrancada tras pararse, y es algo que lleva aprovechando desde que jugaba en tercera división.
A pesar de haber disputado tan solo unos minutos en 5 partidos esta temporada, han sido momentos que llenan de ilusión a la afición del Athletic Club, una afición que siempre se ha caracterizado por ser exigente con los suyos.
Un diamante por pulir
Debe saber controlar cuando es el momento de buscar el regate y cuando es el momento de darle pausa al juego, es joven y es lógico que cada vez que tenga el balón en los pies quiera dar argumentos al entrenador de por qué debe quedarse en el once titular, pero aún es un diamante por pulir.
Bajo la batuta de Marcelino y en un vestuario tan unido como el del Athletic, Nico Williams no lo tendrá dificil para triunfar en San Mamés y en La Liga, tan solo depende de él mismo.
