Tras subir al primer equipo del Admira Wacker, sufrió una fractura de metatarso que le mantuvo alejado de la cancha más de seis meses. Pero esto no sería todo, ya que tras volver de esa lesión, sufriría un desgarro de los ligamentos del tobillo que lo mantendrían otros dos meses alejado. A pesar de la poca continuidad y de las lesiones, consiguió firmar buenos números en lo poco que pudo jugar. En 15 partidos registró 8 goles y 5 asistencias. Esto sirvió para llamar la atención de un histórico alemán que buscaba volver a la Bundesliga, el VfB Stuttgart.
El club alemán pagó cerca de dos millones por los servicios del delantero austriaco, pero las lesiones seguían acechando a Sasa Kalajdzic. En su primera temporada como «schwaben» se rompió el ligamento cruzado y tuvo que esperar hasta el 28 de Mayo de 2020 para debutar con su nuevo club.
El panzer solo pudo sumar 1 gol y 1 asistencia tras la lesión, pero el VfB Stuttgart se había asegurado la vuelta a la categoría dorada del fútbol alemán y seguían confiando en su potencial.

En un plantel con jugadores como Silas Wamangituka, Orel Mangala, Gregor Kobel, Nico González… nadie se esperaba que el austriaco fuera a ser una pieza importante para Pellegrino Matarazzo. Comenzó la temporada con pocos minutos, pero su estilo de juego encajaba con el esquema del entrenador, y a base de buenas actuaciones se ganó la titularidad.
