Rubén Díez está debutando en La Liga Smartbank y se ha convertido en el líder del Castellón en su búsqueda por la salvación, siendo el único equipo en el que ha jugado fuera de Aragón. Tras jugar en varias posiciones y tener a dos entrenadores esta temporada, el de Zaragoza está siendo el líder del conjunto orellut en este tramo final de curso. A sus 27 años ha dejado atrás su apodo «Jamelli» y en su etapa de madurez se ha postulado como un futbolista total.
Carrera en Aragón, pero brillando en Castellón
Siendo de Zaragoza, ha desarrollado casi toda su carrera en Aragón. Pasó por el Stadium Casablanca Juvenil y más tarde dio el salto a Tercera División, donde jugó en el Almudévar. En la 14/15 fichó por el CD Ebro y tras destacar allí, firmó a sus 22 años por el filial del Zaragoza. En el Deportivo Aragón coincidió con varias caras conocidas de la afición zaragocista, como Álvaro Ratón (que sigue en el primer equipo), Julián Delmás o Raúl Guti, ahora en La Liga Santander con el Elche.
Tras una campaña en casa se fue al Tarazona y finalmente, en la 18/19, el CD Teruel le daría la oportunidad de jugar en Segunda B. Sin embargo, no duraría mucho su experiencia, ya que en ese mismo mercado de invierno el Castellón se fijó en él con el objetivo de salvar al equipo en su vuelta a la categoría de bronce.
Tras cumplir el objetivo, con el comienzo de una nueva temporada y la llegada de Óscar Cano como entrenador, el Castellón se convirtió en una de las revelaciones del curso y consiguió quedar primero en de su grupo antes de la llegada de la pandemia y la posterior suspensión de la competición. En los Play off, a pesar de perder en los penaltis contra el Logroñés, consiguieron ascender en la repesca a La Liga Smartbank.

La pieza angular para la salvación junto a Marc Mateu
El Castellón cerró su renovación hasta 2022, el año del centenario, antes de jugar los play off de ascenso la temporada pasada. En esta campaña comenzó con Óscar Cano jugando como interior de base de la jugada en un 4-1-4-1, aunque con el despido del entrenador granadino y la llegada de Juan Carlos Garrido ha vuelto a tener minutos en posiciones más adelantadas, como la de extremo, mediapunta o incluso falso nueve.
Junto a Marc Mateu (4 goles y 8 asistencias), se ha convertido en el líder del Castellón con 7 tantos y 4 pases de gol. Él mismo reconoce que se siente más cómodo en esta nueva posición:
«Me encuentro más cómodo ahora que como mediocentro. Tener más libertad y no ser tan posicional me viene bien. Trataré de ayudar al equipo donde el míster crea que lo puedo hacer mejor».

¿Por qué le llaman «Jamelli» ?
Muchos se preguntan por qué en algunas páginas web le llaman Jamelli. Esto se debe, al igual que Stoichkov, por otro futbolista. Cuando Rubén Díez tenía 5 años, el rubio de su pelo era tan parecido al del exjugador brasileño del Real Zaragoza Paulo Jamelli, que alguien optó por llamarle así. Ni el propio Rubén se acuerda de quién fue, pero lo que está claro es que duró bastante tiempo, ya que ahora todo el mundo le conoce por su nombre real.
De hecho, él mismo ha reconocido que Jamelli no era ni siquiera su ídolo futbolístico y que empezó a fijarse un poco más en él cuando le pusieron ese apodo, aunque fuera por el pelo. Además, hace unos años comentó que sentía admiración por Santi Cazorla.
¿Cómo juega Rubén Díez?
«Rubén Díez es un jugador rara avis en el mundo del fútbol. Jugando es capaz de concentrar los mejores recursos de los compañeros que le rodean. Aporta un equilibro esencial cuando él interviene en las jugadas. Es un lujo tenerle en un club como el nuestro, y espero que nos siga dando muchas alegrías”, Óscar Cano.
Esa capacidad para entender el juego es la principal razón por la que ha jugado en varias posiciones esta temporada, como un camaleón que se adapta al entorno. Desde la posición de falso nueve, el Castellón no solo gana más gol, sino que tiene a un centrocampista más a la hora de crear juego, ya que Rubén Díez completa el 81% de los pases que intenta por partido.
Es cierto que no es un delantero regateador, pero es muy complicado robarle el balón gracias a su 72% de acierto. Su 1,66 de altura no solo le convierte en uno de los jugadores más bajitos de la categoría, sino que además le permite complicar a los rivales gracias a su tren inferior.
Uno de las principales inconvenientes que ha reflejado cuando ha jugado en la base de la jugada, aparte de perderlo en posiciones más adelantadas, es el aspecto defensivo. Rubén Díez solo gana un 36% de los duelos que disputa, lo que denota que desde pequeño ha jugado en zonas más adelantadas, con menor exigencia en ese sentido.
El zaragozano ha encontrado el lugar ideal para cambiar su carrera y aunque esté debutando esta temporada en la categoría de plata, aún le quedan muchos años de fútbol por delante.
