Un «Moneyball» llevado a la vida real
La forma de captación del Brentford es curiosa. En todos los clubes de fútbol es habitual la presencia de un director de fútbol, pero los «bees» tienen dos. Y nada de ojeadores ni informes, sino estadísticas. Sus categorías inferiores están llenas de jugadores nórdicos, algo relativamente curioso para un club de Championship. Al más puro estilo Billy Beane y sus Oakland Athletics, el Brentford hace uso de las «stats» para conformar su equipo.
Y es que el Brentford ficha mediante estadística. Los directores de fútbol pasan horas y horas delante de televisores ojeando jugadores y filtrando según el número de centros al área bien puestos, goles por partido o duelos ganados.
A priori en todos los equipos deberían filtrar la información así, pero la mayoría prefiere ver presencialmente a los jugadores. Porque quién no quiere tener en su equipo al mejor centrador, para que sus balones sean rematados por el jugador que mejor lo hace. Algo similar hizo el Liverpool con Downing y Carroll, pero a estos últimos el experimento no les salió tan bien.
Si miramos un XI tipo, solo 4 jugadores superan la cantidad de 25 años, lo que nos hace ver el rejuvenecimiento que ha llevado el equipo entrenado por Thomas Frank, uno de los grandes artífices de este equipo. Un técnico que llega al club londinense como segundo técnico, pero poco a poco se ha consolidado en el banquillo de Griffin Park colocando al equipo en tercera posición en la clasificación.

Ollie Watkins, el gran depredador de Brentford
Brentford siempre ha sido casa de grandes delanteros. El año pasado se caracteriza por la explosión de Neal Maupay, que acabó fichando por el Brighton, mientras que es Watkins quien este año sobresale por encima de los demás.
Natural de Torquay, el delantero ficha por el Exeter City a la edad de 11 años, y va quemando etapas de manera fugaz en edad juvenil. Su debut profesional se remonta a la última jornada de la League Two de la temporada 2013-2014 frente al Hartlepool United.
