El mes de julio dio el pistoletazo de salida, las vacaciones de muchos arrancaban y las noticias en el mercado de fichajes se iban produciendo tras cuadrar el ejercicio económico de la 2022-2023 el pasado 30 de junio. Sin embargo, en el Valencia sólo se había confirmado la continuidad de Rubén Baraja, la ejecución de la opción de compra de Cenk Ozkacar y algún rumor por parte de abandonar el club de algunos nombres importantes, como Samu Castillejo o Edison Cavani.
Pero este fin de semana, el murciélago más importante de la ciudad dio un mordisco a una Levante U.D. herida que aún tiene en la retina el penalti transformado por Asier Villalibre, que evitó la vuelta de los granotas a Primera División. Ahora, su canterano Pepelu se marcha a Mestalla por cinco temporadas por un precio de 5 M que el conjunto Ché lo pagará en dos plazos. La indignación está reluciendo en el Ciutat de Valencia por la gestión del Valencia en el fichaje de uno de los canteranos, donde hasta hace nada, era de los jugadores más queridos por la afición del Levante. Eso sí, simplemente el Valencia ha ejecutado la cláusula y, por este motivo, es innecesario crear una batalla en un momento crítico para ambos murciélagos.
Pepelu, ¿Traición o salto en su carrera?
Si se analiza desde una perspectiva de negocio y de sentido común, todas las partes salen ganando. El Valencia, tiritando en lo económico, sumado a una gestión deportiva imperdonable, ficha a un jugador rentable por una cantidad inusual en estos tiempos, además de subir su cláusula a 100 millones de euros. Por su parte, el Levante demuestra una vez más su exportación de cantera. Asimismo, ha evitado crear una guerra priorizando el nuevo proyecto que están armando para volver a Primera División, donde están siendo uno de los equipos más activos de la categoría de plata en este mercado de fichajes. Por su parte, Pepelu da un salto en su carrera a sus 24 años y, si todas las partes están de acuerdo, el movimiento es entendible.

Ahora bien, en esta operación no puede quedar fuera el elemento sentimental. El aficionado granota está indignado con el centrocampista, ya que le consideraban un ‘One Club Man’. Y lo que no esperaban, que si algún día abandonaba al Levante, lo hiciera al vecino y equipo más importante de la Comunidad Valenciana. No hay que olvidar que Pepelu renovó hasta 2032 hace algo más de un año, alegando que fue ‘la mejor decisión de su vida’. Ahora, se despide con un comunicado, pero la sensación es fría y llamativa, ya que no dedica ni una palabra a Quico Catalán, presidente del club.
Mucho mundo a sus 24 años
La carrera del canterano no ha sido fácil. Formado en la Escuela Municipal de Fútbol Base de Denia y el club granota, pasó por el Atlético Levante o el Hércules. Es más, tuvo que hacer las maletas en dos ocasiones, ambas hacia Portugal. En el Tondela debutó en el fútbol profesional, donde jugó 33 partidos, anotando dos goles y repartiendo 4 asistencias, siendo pieza clave. Una integración que fue un éxito gracias a la presencia española en el club luso, donde David Belenguer es su propietario y, en aquel momento, Natxo González era su entrenador. Los Maior Das Beiras fueron la sensación de la competición en aquella 19/20, donde quedaron a un punto de entrar a Europa. Presente en todos los proyectos de las categorías inferiores de la selección española, acumuló otra cesión en el Vitoria Guimaraes hasta debutar en su Levante en la 2021/2022.

Tras mucho esfuerzo, a Pepelu le llegó su sueño en una temporada de pesadilla donde el equipo bajó a Segunda. Un descenso y un ascenso frustrado con un guion inaudito que le han llevado a no seguir en el Ciutat de Valencia, a pesar de ser uno de los indiscutibles de Javier Calleja.
¿Qué aportará Pepelu al Valencia?
No se puede negar la evidencia. Si hay una incorporación que necesitaba el conjunto de Baraja junto a la de un goleador, era esta. En su 4-2-3-1, la leyenda valencianista encontró un equilibrio con Nico González y el canterano Javi Guerra que permitió liberar a un André Almeida que pudo jugar más adelantado en el tramo final de la temporada. Tras agotarse la cesión del primero, se quedó una pieza vacía que la complementará un Pepelu que su carta de presentación es simple: pivote puro al que no le importa tener un socio, como lo fue Iborra en el Levante. De la vieja escuela, es un jugador que aportará intensidad (13 amarillas), seguridad en el pase y su habilidad más destacada, como es la intercepción del balón. Por tanto, dará elementos suficientes a los de Baraja y el Valencia dará un salto en equilibro y solidez.
Además, hay otro secreto por encontrar en la razón de su fichaje. Pepelu ya coincidió con Almeida en el Vitoria Guimaraes, lo que será otra ventaja a la hora de planificar conceptos durante la pretemporada. Por otro lado, si forma dupla con Javi Guerra, será importante que Pepelu, que fue canterano, pueda guiar en los altos y bajos del chaval de 20 años que asombró en Mestalla en este 2023.

A nivel futbolístico, Pepelu tiene la virtud de romper líneas de presión a través del pase y de ejecutar pases hacia adelante, siendo en esto último el tercero de la categoría con mejor porcentaje de acierto (81%). Para un Valencia que se ha visto superado en las pérdidas en campo propio o muy previsible en salida de balón, especialmente, con el 4-3-3, será clave la presencia del ya ex del Levante.
