El fútbol es un deporte maravilloso, aunque en incontables momentos injusto. Ya no solo en cuanto a los resultados, sino también respecto al rendimiento de ciertos jugadores. Si muchos delanteros o mediocampistas no reciben el crédito que merecen anotando goles y repartiendo asistencias encuentro tras encuentro, en el caso de los guardametas gozar de reconocimiento es algo todavía más difícil. Esta es la injusta situación de Aitor Fernández, portero del Levante UD. Quién aun llevando a cabo la mejor temporada de su carrera, e incluso deteniendo más balones que los principales porteros estrella de la Liga Santander, no se le da el reconocimiento que se merece. Pero, antes de citar estadísticas de esta campaña, repasemos la carrera del actual portero de 29 años.
Los comienzos de Aitor Fernández
Es curioso como un portero que, a priori, no parecía estar destinado a la máxima categoría del fútbol español, acaba dando un salto de calidad y asentándose entre los mejores guardametas, al menos en cuanto a estadísticas se refiere, de toda la competición. Así sería la carrera de Aitor Fernández, quien comenzaría su carrera como profesional con tan solo 19 años.
Por aquel entonces, el joven arquero español militaba en las filas del Bilbao Athletic, equipo de Segunda División B. Durante las siguientes 5 temporadas, vagaría por toda la categoría, pasando por equipos como el Villarreal B o el Barakaldo. Sin embargo, y tras varias temporadas en las filas del Villarreal B, en la temporada 2016/17 llegaría finalmente al equipo donde desempeñaría un nivel nunca antes visto en su carrera.
En Segunda División y defendiendo la portería del C.D. Numancia, el conjunto de Jagoba Arrasate por aquel entonces lograría la ansiada permanencia con Aitor Fernández como portero titular. Tras aquella temporada, el guardameta vasco y el club numantino conseguirían llegar a los PlayOffs de ascenso tan solo un año después. Y, pese a perder en las finales de esta fase de ascenso, el espectacular año del guardameta le llevaría a las filas de un equipo de la máxima categoría del fútbol español, el Levante UD.
La llegada del guardameta a Primera División
Dejando en las arcas del club numantino una cantidad cercana a los 1.2 Millones de euros, el guardameta vasco pondría rumbo a la portería del Ciutat de Valencia en verano de 2018. Llegaría a un Levante UD con Oier Olazábal como titular. Era difícil para un recién llegado ocupar el puesto de portero titular, y más frente a un jugador criado en la masía blaugrana. Pero, con esfuerzo y paciencia, su oportunidad llegaría.
Lejos de desaprovechar dicha oportunidad, Aitor Fernández se ganaría su puesto en el once titular a base de esfuerzo, trabajo y, sobre todo, paradas. Su debut en primera división no llegaría hasta febrero de 2019, en un encuentro frente al Getafe C.F. de José Bordalás. Quién diría que tan solo un año después de su debut en la categoría, conseguiría posicionarse como el portero con más paradas de La Liga Santander.
La temporada 2019/2020 de Aitor Fernández
Con el levante ocupando la decimotercera plaza, la salvación parece estar más cerca que en años atrás. Y esta gesta es en gran parte por culpa de Aitor Fernández. Sin embargo, antes de su explosión ya había quien se atrevía a compararlo con otro de los porteros icónicos que han pasado por el Levante UD: Keylor Navas. Dichas comparaciones vendrían de Jorge Bartual, antiguo entrenador de porteros del Villarreal B, con quien ya coincidiría Aitor. A través de estas palabras comparaba Bartual en verano de 2018 a Aitor Fernandez, con el actual portero del PSG:
Gracias a sus 126 paradas en lo que llevamos de liga, el arquero del levante cuenta con más detenciones que porteros de la talla de Ter Stegen, Oblak o Courtois. Además de esto, el vasco ha conseguido detener 2 de los 5 penaltis que le han lanzado esta temporada, dejándolo así con un 40% de detención en la pena máxima.
El portero del Levante parece estar pasando por una de esas temporadas en las que «todo sale». Esas temporadas que parecen magia, pero las cuales llevan un incontable esfuerzo tras ellas. Habiendo cumplido hace escasos días los 29 años, su futuro podría cambiar de un momento a otro. Siendo la del portero una posición en la que la edad no repercute tanto, – véase al bueno de Buffon – su salida hacia un club más grande, ya sea dentro de España o fuera de ella, cada vez parece más posible.
