Más al norte nos encontramos con Bramall Lane, lugar que aloja al verdadero lado malo de la ciudad, al Sheffield United. Durante estos años el club ha mantenido un modo de fichaje cada vez mas inusual, pues los equipos se nutren cada día de un buen numero de foráneos.
Para la entidad, el fútbol solo se extiende hasta los límites de la frontera de la isla de Gran Bretaña y de la Isla de Irlanda. O por lo menos hasta este mercado de fichajes.
El año pasado fueron una de las sorpresas en Championship, quedando en segundo lugar por detrás del Norwich City. El entrenador, Chris Wilder, nunca es timorato con sus ideas tácticas: defensa de 5, un mediocentro más de destrucción que de construcción y dos delanteros que puedan bajar balones de la luna. Parece sencillo, pero este esquema lleva mucho trabajo detrás.
Un sistema férreo y efectivo en la Premier League
Muchos expertos tenían dudas de como rendiría el equipo en la Premier League, pues a priori ascendían con un equipo con jugadores de bajo nivel. Billy Sharp había destacado en Championship, pero no sabían cómo se desempeñaría en una liga tan exigente, Dean Henderson destacó, pero también había dudas sobre su posible rendimiento y por Wilder, pues los expertos se preguntaban si era el indicado para dirigir el equipo en Premier League.
El Sheffield United se puso a trabajar y en el mercado de verano incorporó a jugadores que les ayudaran a sumar experiencia como es el caso de Phil Jagielka, quien ya tiene 37 años o de Lys Mousset, que no había terminado de explotar en el Bournemouth.
El equipo funcionaba a las mil maravillas. Egan, O’Conell y Basham se han consolidado como los centrales de un equipo que por encima de todo es solido. Aunque la gran nota en este equipo la ponen los carrileros. Baldock y Stevens mas que defensas son extremos, pues su posición es por delante de los interiores, nutriendo de centros al área a los delanteros que jueguen en la ocasión. Así, con ese sistema sobre el papel y sobre la realidad defensivo, han conseguido poner contra las cuerdas a equipos como el Liverpool o el Manchester City y ganarse los elogios de propios y extraños.
La revolución invernal del Sheffield United
Las cosas iban bien, pero el club necesitaba algo más para dar el salto definitivo. Arrancó el mercado de fichajes y el Sheffield no se movía. Parecía un gato en una jaula con leones, pues por todos es sabido que se mueve mucho dinero en la Premier League.
Pero ese gato poco a poco fue adelantando posiciones en la jaula y comenzó a sacar la cabeza sorprendiendo a todo el mundo. El Sheffield United consiguió, primero el fichaje de Sander Berge, una de las perlas de Europa y por el que suspiraba medio continente para sobre la bocina cerrar la contratación de Paniagotis Retsos, la gran promesa griega.
Con esto el Sheffield nos dejaba una importante declaración de intenciones abriendo el mercado y dejando a un lado su filosofía, la cual ha dado tan buenos frutos. Este parón obligado por circunstancias más que obvias ha provocado que el Sheffield vea truncado su buen rendimiento, pero seguro que en los años venideros darán mucho de que hablar.
