Julen Guerrero es uno de los jugadores más recordados en El Botxo, un icono del Athletic Club que comandó al equipo durante más de 10 temporadas, pero, ¿quién era Julen Guerrero?

La Perla de Lezama

El Portugalujo comenzó su etapa en el Athletic a la temprana edad de 8 años, jugando en las categorías inferiores y destacando en todas ellas.

A los 18 años Jupp Heynckes vio algo especial en él y no dudo en hacerle debutar con el primer equipo, marcando el gol que le diol la victoria al Athletic en su debut ante el Cádiz, comenzando así a escribir la historia de uno de los mayores iconos de Los Leones. Un año después, con tan solo 19 años, debutó en la Selección Española de la mano de Javier Clemente, y desde entonces fue un indiscutible tanto en el club como en el equipo nacional, portando aquel característico dorsal número 8.

Julen Guerrero se consolidó como uno de los mejores jugadores españoles de aquella época, siendo uno de los más cotizados, rechazando ofertas de clubes punteros en Europa con tal de demostrar su lealtad al club que le dio a conocer.

El Rey León rugía en San Mamés

Su trayectoria en el Athletic Club no se resume solamente en estadísticas, fue un jugador que marcó a una generación desde Lezama, y aún más importante, llenó de ilusión a una afición que quería volver a ver a su equipo en lo más alto.

La Perla de Lezama se consolidó en su segunda temporada con el club del Botxo, marcando 21 goles y siendo convocado por la selección española,y no tardaron en llegarle las ofertas. En 1994, Julen Guerrero fue nombrado mejor jugador de La Liga.

Quizá este fue uno de los momentos más importantes para los aficionados del Athletic Club, ver como tu mayor estrella rechaza irse a un club grande y renovar con tu equipo, un gesto que le hizo grande y que demostró que Julen Guerrero sentía el escudo que llevaba en el pecho.

Tras rechazar las ofertas de clubes como el Real Madrid o el Inter de Milán, Julen Guerrero renovó en 1995 con un contrato que le uniría al Athletic Club hasta 2007.

«Yo no tuve ídolos concretos, mi espejo fue el Athletic de la Gabarra»

Julen Guerrero fue un icono de los que pocos quedan en la entidad bilbaína, un jugador que entendió lo que era vestir la camiseta del Athletic y qué entendió a la perfección lo que eso conllevaba. Un total de 14 temporadas con el primer equipo, más de 430 partidos y 116 goles lo convirtieron motu proprio en leyenda del Athletic Club.

Un final amargo para Julen Guerrero

Tras renovar en 1995 y ser uno de los referentes del club en más de 10 temporadas, en 2002 comenzaron los rifirrafes entre entidad y jugador. Nadie se explicaba como no podía contar para el equipo alguien que se había dejado el alma por esa camiseta. De un día para otro, Julen Guerrero dejó de entrar en los planes del Athletic Club.

A eso se le unieron los problemas internos en el vestuario, el «run run» de la grada por no ver al Rey León en el césped de San Mamés y su desaparición prematura de los planes del club. Entonces apareció la figura non-grata para gran parte de la afición bilbaína, Fernando Lamikiz.

El entonces presidente del club se reunió con Julen Guerrero y convenció al mismo de que colgara las botas y pasara a ser un entrenador en las categorías inferiores.

La retirada de una leyenda del Athletic

El 11 de julio de 2006 Julen Guerrero anunciaba su retirada, cuando aún le restaba un año de contrato.

«Me veo con fuerzas de jugar un año más, pero este es el momento de dejarlo por las circunstancias que sean, es lo mejor para el Athletic» – Julen Guerrero el día de su retirada.

De esta forma pasó a ser entrenador en Lezama, se encargó del equipo juvenil y tras más rifirrafes con la directiva, en 2008 se desvinculó por completo del club.

Hoy en día Julen Guerrero se desempeña como entrenador en las categorías inferiores de la selección española, aparte de colaborar en diferentes medios deportivos.

Esta es la historia de uno de los mayores iconos del Athletic Club, un jugador que mostró su amor a un escudo que cuando él más lo necesitó le falló por la cúpula del club. Jugadores como Julen Guerrero pocos quedan en el Athletic Club, jugadores que entiendan que el fútbol no siempre es dinero y hay casos en los que el amor por unos colores te lleva más lejos que cualquier cifra.
