El jugador lombardo arribó en la provincia de Módena con cierta timidez, sin ser consciente del potencial que atesoraba. Roberto de Zerbi, ya entrenador de los »Sasòl» por aquel entonces, ejerció de padre adoptivo del joven Locatelli, consiguiendo que alcanzase su máximo nivel y se convenciese, por fin, de que el fútbol de su equipo, e incluso de su país, debía pasar siempre por sus botas.
Su punto de inflexión fue la campaña 19/20, en la que se desató por completo y fue titular en 35 de los 38 encuentros disputados por los de Sassuolo (1 gol y 4 asistencias).

El punto débil de los »neroverdi» es la defensa. La temporada pasada encajó 63 goles en 38 partidos. Este curso, pese a su inmejorable arranque, no parece haber resuelto sus flaquezas defensivas, y sus redes ya han sido perforadas en 9 ocasiones.
