Gales, un país eclipsado e ignorado por Inglaterra. Un país de tierras verdes, gente auténtica y fútbol, buen fútbol.

Swansea y Cardiff suenan en todo el mundo, pues pese a ser equipos de Gales, disputan las competiciones inglesas. Lleva siendo así desde mucho tiempo atrás y no parece que vaya a cambiar.

Sin embargo, en el país también existe una liga, aunque es de entidad menor. La llamada JD Cymru Premier fue la última en llegar dentro del conglomerado británico, pues su primera temporada data del año 1992.  Actualmente la disputan un total de 12 equipos y el equipo con mayor palmarés es el The New Saints, que cuenta con 13 entorchados y que es el protagonista de este artículo. 

Una historia casi de película

TNS es la abreviatura de The New Saints of Oswestry Town and Llansantffraid Football Club. Anteriormente este equipo fue llamado Llansantffraid FC, en referencia a la pequeña ciudad en la que disputaba sus partidos. 

Poco a poco el equipo fue ascendiendo, lo que llamó la atención de la empresa de telecomunicaciones Total Network Solutions. Tras esta adquisición, el equipo pasó a llamarse Total Network Solutions FC, por ello su diminutivo TNS.  Gracias a dicha empresa, el equipo comenzó a profesionalizarse, lo que le permitió pagar mejores contratos a tiempo completo, convirtiéndose en el primer equipo profesional de la Liga de Gales. 

En la temporada 1999/2000 ganó su primera Liga de Gales y la temporada siguiente disputó su primera Liga de Campeones. En la primera ronda previa fue eliminado por el Levadia de Tallin.

Un equipo entre Gales e Inglaterra

Al ser una ciudad fronteriza entre Gales e Inglaterra, el equipo tuvo la gran ventaja de poder reclutar a los mejores jugadores de la zona de su vecina. Fruto de esto, el equipo decidió absorber el Owestry FC, disputando sus partidos a la vez en Gales e Inglaterra y ganando de forma consecutiva las Ligas de Gales de los años 2005, 2006 y 2007.

En el año 2006, BT, una gigante empresa de telecomunicaciones británica, compró Total Network Solutions. Tras ello, los aficionados decidieron cambiar el nombre del equipo, y tras llegar a un consenso decidieron mantener el apodo de TNS y renombrar al equipo como The New Saints. 

Pero esto tan solo es la historia del club, que detrás esconde muchas cosas más. Actualmente son líderes de la Premier League de Gales, invictos y con una forma descomunal. Además, estuvieron a punto de hacer historia en Europa, pues tras eliminar al Zilina lituano en primera ronda de eliminación de la UEL, cayeron derrotados en la tanda de penaltis frente al B36 de las Islas Feroe.

Durante los últimos años el equipo ha mejorado de manera ostensible su cantera, dando buenos frutos y llegando a debutar varios canteranos en competiciones europeas. 

Louis Robles, un español en el The New Saints

En su plantilla juega Louis Robles, un británico-español con pasado en las categorías inferiores del Liverpool y que también jugó en equipos como el Wigan o el Atlético Baleares. 

Louis es un chico humilde. Según se describe él, un chico normal. “Soy un chico normal, que nació en Liverpool con el padre español. Tengo 24 años y llevo toda la vida jugando al fútbol.”

Antes de dar su salto al fútbol profesional, pasó por la prolífica cantera del Liverpool. Esta fue su experiencia: 

“El Liverpool me firmó en 2005 (sub9) y jugué 9/10 temporadas ahí hasta juveniles. La competencia cada año en una cantera tan grande es lo que es más difícil. En los primeros años, traen muchos chicos de ciudades como Liverpool y Manchester de prueba y tienes que mostrar siempre que eres mejor que los niños de fuera. Pero cuando llegas a sub 15 más o menos, ahí es cuando empieza todo porque ahora traen gente de diferentes países y otros clubes grandes en el país, y ahora está compitiendo con chicos que han sido comprados por mucho. Pero la verdad es que me encantó mi tiempo ahí, y tuve muchos éxitos. Aprendí un montón y formé mi fuerza mental.”

 

Una de las cosas que todo el mundo quiere saber a la hora de abrirse al fútbol internacional es que diferencia hay del juego de España al resto de países. Tras pasar por EEUU, España, Inglaterra y Gales,  Louis lo tiene claro:

“Gente de afuera siempre dicen que el fútbol en España es técnicamente mucho mejor que los demás, pero para mí jugando en 4 países, el fútbol en España es muy táctico, los españoles (entrenadores y jugadores) son muy muy listos en el campo, y saben ganar. La estrategia es muy importante, y la forma de defender y no conceder goles es básico, en mi experiencia allí. En Inglaterra, Gales y EEUU ponen mucho más interés en lo físico, el fitness, y la capacidad de correr todo el partido. Pero en mi experiencia, yo sentí que hay más libertad en el ataque y oportunidades para expresarse.”

 

Tras un paso por España decide volverse a las islas británicas para encontrar nuevos retos, ahí se encuentra con el Bala:

“Volviendo de jugar en el San Roque De Lepe decido que quiero volver a casa, y encontrar algo cerca. Tenía un muy buen amigo en el Bala, y él hablo con el entrenador y así es como paso. El Bala los últimos años siempre ha sido uno de los equipos más fuertes en la liga Galesa y muchas veces juegan en Europa, entonces estaba muy contento de ir ahí»

 

Una buena temporada en el Bala Town le sirve para firmar por el The New Saints, el equipo más laureado del país, donde juega actualmente:

“Después de un año bueno, hace poco firmé con el TNS que es el mejor equipo en la liga galesa, y estoy muy contento de estar en un club tan fuerte. El objetivo personal es jugar en Europa, meter goles y ayudar a mi equipo. El objetivo grupal es ganar unos partidos en Europa, y ganar todo domésticamente, la liga, y las copas. Durante esta temporada el equipo está muy motivado, y estamos muy metidos en lo que tenemos que hacer este año.” 

Este es el TNS, un curioso equipo que está creciendo y que posiblemente, dentro de poco, veamos disputar competiciones europeas.
