Convertirte en ídolo en Bilbao no es tarea sencilla, lo saben bien los jugadores que han pasado por el Athletic Club. El caso de Yeray es único, un canterano al que la vida lo puso entre la espada y la pared con un cáncer testicular. Con el apoyo de su afición, compañeros y su afán de superación, consiguió salir adelante.
Yeray se ha convertido en uno de los jugadores más importantes del equipo después de casi verse obligado a dejar el fútbol. Una historia de superación poco común que ha tenido como recompensa a tanto esfuerzo de ser un icono en San Mamés y para la afición rojiblanca.
Rendirse no es una opción
Yeray jamás olvidará las navidades del año 2016. El cáncer, esa enfermedad malvada que lamentablemente sigue a la orden del día, había tocado a su puerta. Al central de Barakaldo le diagnosticaron un cáncer testicular y su vida cambió por completo.
Una enfermedad presente en su familia ya que había perdido a dos de sus abuelos por ella. Descubrir que le había tocado a él le sentó como un tiro en el pecho, pero la palabra ‘rendirse’ jamás pasó por su cabeza. En una entrevista concedida al medio Relevo, el central declaró que tener esta enfermedad con 21 años «es algo de lo que no eres consciente», y que durante momentos no fue capaz de asimilar su nueva realidad. El tumor fue extraído y en poco tiempo estaba de vuelta en los terrenos de juego. Tras superarlo, volvió a vestir la camiseta del Athletic en una fecha muy simbólica: 4 de febrero, el Día Mundial contra el Cáncer.
Todo fue bien hasta que la maldita palabra volvió a aparecer. En esta ocasión, los médicos habían detectado que el cáncer se había reproducido y era necesario tomar medidas. Yeray describió este momento como «el más duro», ya que el suceso implicaba la necesidad de la quimioterapia. El propio jugador recuerda que el tratamiento fue un proceso muy difícil, por los efectos y las secuelas que generaba en su cuerpo. Y también destaca la suerte de haber tenido a su familia cerca en todo momento. Uno de los instantes más bonitos que rememora es la sorpresa que le hizo toda la plantilla del Athletic Club, rapándose la cabeza en un gesto de solidaridad con el central.

La recuperación total llegó, pero la vida no dio tregua a Yeray ni en ese momento. El mismo día que le confirmaron que su cáncer estaba curado, falleció su abuela.
El cerrojo de San Mamés
A sus 28 años y tras toda una vida de rojiblanco, Yeray ha conseguido hacerse un nombre en San Mamés gracias a su rendimiento y a su amor por el club. Han sido temporadas llenas de regularidad, siendo el acompañante de otro central de más renombre. Todo esto hasta que la afición del Athletic ha empezado a cuestionarse si el verdadero central de renombre es él.
Su campaña 2022/23 puede considerarse la de su explosión, alzándose como la pieza más importante en una zaga formada con Dani Vivian y en otras ocasiones con Iñigo Martínez. Quizá la polémica con la renovación de este último y la reciente entrada en el equipo del primer mencionado lo hayan elevado hasta ese estatus. Pero su nivel ha sido altísimo y lo ha demostrado fin de semana tras fin de semana. Gracias a ese rendimiento el Athletic fue uno de los equipos que más tiempo mantuvo su portería a cero al inicio de la temporada, durante cuatro jornadas.
En cuanto a estadísticas, Yeray es uno de los centrales a destacar en LaLiga. Regatearle es tarea difícil, ya que promedia 0’2 regates recibidos por partido, esto acompañado de 1’8 intercepciones cada 90 minutos. También es una fuerza dominante por aire pese a su 1’83 cm de altura, ganando más de la mitad de los duelos aéreos que disputa por partido. Con balón también merece ser destacado, es de los defensas que más carreras progresivas completa con éxito de LaLiga y también uno de los que más pases progresivos completa.

¿Cómo juega Yeray?
El de Barakaldo destaca por ser un central de corte clásico. De los de toda la vida, duros al corte y con un estilo de juego que recuerda a otros tiempos. El ejemplo que puso Carlo Ancelotti con Nacho Fernández sirve perfectamente para describirle; es un central pesimista ya que siempre cree que va a pasar algo, lo cual le hace estar siempre alerta en los momentos clave.
Sus virtudes son puramente defensivas. Es un central que genera confianza simplemente por la tranquilidad que transmite en sus acciones. Soberbio a la hora de cortar la pelota y sacarla jugada. Esto último lo ha ido mejorando con el paso de los años. Su posicionamiento defensivo rara vez suele ser incorrecto, aspecto que le hace ser infalible en los duelos en el suelo. Además, si tiene que tirarse con todo para cortar una jugada no se lo piensa dos veces. En definitiva, su regularidad también merece mención.
También ha mejorado en los factores que no se ven en el césped. Con el paso del tiempo ha ido ganando más jerarquía y ya ejerce de líder de la zaga. Con Yeray a este nivel, la retaguardia de la guarida de los leones está bajo seguro. En conclusión, San Mamés tiene nuevo kaiser, pero desde hace mucho tiempo.
