20 de mayo de 2020, el día en el que el fútbol español perdía a uno de sus grandes delanteros, el día en el que Aritz Aduriz anunciaba su retirada inmediata del fútbol profesional. La maldita cadera, esa que tantos problemas le dio la pasada temporada y que le ha obligado a retirarse esta misma.
Se retira en una temporada con tintes especiales, nadie podía pintar una última temporada con una final de Copa del Rey, y no cualquier final, ni más ni menos que ante la Real Sociedad. Pero ya conocemos el dicho «el fútbol te quita lo que unos días te da».
La carrera de Aduriz no sigue el estándar determinado, el donostiarra salió dos veces por la puerta de atrás, la primera hacia Burgos, tras acabar contrato con el Athletic, para volver en 2008 a Bilbao tras una gran temporada en Valladolid.
Tras esto, salió de nuevo, esta vez hacia Mallorca, donde sus goles le valieron para jugar con el Valencia y posteriormente, volver al club de sus amores de manera definitiva. Volvió a Bilbao con 31 años, a dar al club de sus amores los últimos años de una carrera que explotaría desde ese momento.

Quién le iba a decir a Aritz Aduriz que iba a pasar a ser uno de los grandes delanteros de la historia del Athletic Club. Con un total de 405 partidos, 172 goles y 49 asistencias, Aritz Aduriz pasaría a los anales de la historia del club del «Botxo».
Y es que hay razones de sobra para que Aduriz esté entre los mejores jugadores de la historia del Athletic, un sinfín de logros, y una explosión futbolística a partir de los 30, al alcance de unos pocos. Ha sido máximo goleador de la Europa League dos veces, único jugador en marcar cinco goles en un partido de la Europa League. Y a nivel nacional, único jugador en haber marcado cuatro goles en una final de la Supercopa de España, uno de los tres jugadores en haber marcado a 35 equipos en la Primera División, único jugador español en haber marcado 100 goles o más en Primera División tras haber cumplido los 30 años… y un largo etcétera de logros que consiguió «El Zorro» con la zamarra «zurigorri».

Como ya decía antes, un 20 de mayo de 2020, Aritz Aduriz anunciaba su retirada inmediata de los terrenos de juego, un final que nadie deseaba para uno de los mejores delanteros españoles de la última década.

El donostiarra deja el Athletic Club siendo el tercer máximo goleador de la historia del club, siendo superado únicamente por Dani y Telmo Zarra. Deja un legado enorme para los que vengan, una sombra difícil de hacer olvidar. Porque San Mamés ya no será lo mismo sin los goles de Aritz Aduriz, sin esa celebración con los brazos abiertos y sin ese delantero, que cuando menos lo esperábamos, volvió al club de sus amores y nos dejó marcado a todos.
Un delantero que nos demostró que efectivamente, a la tercera va la vencida. La tercera vez que volvió a San Mamés, volvió para quedarse, hizo historia y se nos va cómo una leyenda que siempre vivirá en el graderìo de «La Catedral».
El 22 de mayo fue su despedida. Una despedida un tanto extraña, sin la parroquia de San Mamés despidiendo a uno de sus mayores ídolos tal y como merece. El Athletic Club ofreció una entrevista en San Mames, donde todo el club acompañó a Aritz en su día.
