‘Es una decisión mía. Debe mejorar el nivel y lo sabe, he hablado con él’, afirmó José Bordalás en septiembre sobre la situación de Hélder Costa, uno de los fichajes del Valencia CF esta temporada. Una incorporación que fue impuesta por Peter Lim y secundada por Jorge Mendes, agente del futbolista (Gestifute).

Todo parecía que el jugador de 28 años iba a contar con pocas oportunidades pero en tres meses, ha conseguido convencer al ex del Getafe, que ya le ve como uno de sus soldados. Dueño de la banda derecha de Mestalla, Hélder encadena diez titularidades consecutivas en La Liga. A pesar de que el foco mediático aún no se ha puesto sobre el angoleño; el aficionado del Valencia reclama que se efectúe la opción de compra por el extremo cedido del Leeds United.

 

¿Quién llevaba la razón?

El fichaje de Hélder Costa fue uno de los culebrones más comentados del último mercado de fichajes, más que nada, porque se confirmó por parte de La Liga a la 1:00 de la madrugada, a pesar de que la documentación llegó a las 23:53 horas. Previamente, el debate estuvo servido. Bordalás no quería al jugador y esto provocó el primer rumor de fricción entre el técnico y Lim. Una disputa que quedó aliviada por las otras incorporaciones veraniegas, que fueron petición expresa del alicantino.

 «Creo que Hélder va a convencer a Bordalás. Viene de estar dos años con Bielsa, un técnico que exige mucho en defensa». Pablo Hernández, ex compañero de Hélder en el Leeds United.

Probablemente, la razón la llevaban los tres. Lim por querer incorporarle, Bordalás por darle tiempo para ponerse a tono (el jugador llegó en la jornada 4) y el propio Hélder Costa, que si bien siempre ha sido cuestionado por su valor en el mercado, se nota que ha mejorado su rendimiento físico y técnico tras haber trabajado con grandes entrenadores como Nuno Espirito Santo o Marcelo Bielsa.

 

De la amistad a tener una oportunidad

El primer giro importante en la carrera de Hélder se presenta en la temporada 2014/2015. Su mejor amigo, Iván Cavaleiro, jugaba en el Deportivo de la Coruña por aquel entonces. Canteranos del SL Benfica, Cavaleiro llegó en verano y Costa en el mercado invernal. De hecho, también compartieron vestuario en el AS Monaco y en los Wolves.

 «Iván se lo merece todo. Tiene un talento enorme y es muy trabajador. Ojalá pudiera dar yo el mismo rendimiento que él. Pasamos todo el día juntos. Vivimos pared con pared y echamos muchas horas con la Play. Ahí le gano yo, con mucha diferencia. También vamos a jugar a los bolos». De alguna manera, estoy en el Deportivo por él».

Su etapa en Riazor no fue brillante, ya que solo disputo seis partidos y no pudo convencer en ningún momento a Víctor Sánchez del Amo ni a Víctor Fernández. Posteriormente, tras un breve paso por el Mónaco, donde no lo hizo mal, acabó saliendo para ir a uno de los proyectos más atípicos de la última década.

 

 

Hélder Costa, a la conquista de la Premier League

Para el Wolverhampton, su historia cambió en 2016. Y también para Hélder Costa. La compañía china Fosun Internacional compró a los Wolves por 50 millones de euros. Una adquisición que provocó un toque portugués en la institución, algo inusual en los equipos de Inglaterra. Con Jorge Mendes moviendo los hilos y colocando jugadores al gusto de Nuno; los Wolves volvían a la Premier League seis años después, con un Hélder Costa que anotó 5 goles y dio 6 asistencias. Él, junto a Rubén Neves, Diogo Jota, el propio Cavaleiro o Bonatini, hicieron una Championship de ensueño (99 puntos).

Curiosamente, tres ex deportivisitas llegaban a la Premier League para dejar una huella y dejar en el recuerdo un equipo sólido y letal en los contraataques (aún actualmente con Bruno Lage). Sin embargo, la presencia de Hélder Costa fue a menos y su siguiente destino iba a ser en otro retorno de un gigante caído a la Premier: el Leeds United. Una experiencia similar, en la que fue pieza clave en el ascenso pero que ya en la máxima categoría del fútbol inglés quedó relegado a un segundo plano, tanto por banda derecha (Jack Harrison) como por banda izquierda (Raphinha).

 

¿Por qué se ha hecho un hueco Hélder Costa en el Valencia?

Hélder Costa es un jugador que por sus cualidades, puede entrar perfectamente en el estilo de juego de Bordalás. Su velocidad y su gran fondo físico permite que se adapte mejor a este tipo de equipos que a uno tipo Bielsa. Además, su ganancia de masa muscular le ha permitido ganar fortaleza. Aparte de llegar a última hora de mercado, Bordalás ya tenía un once tipo fijado, algo que es básico en el técnico alicantino, un entrenador que no suele hacer rotaciones. Lo positivo de Hélder es que puede jugar por ambos costados, aunque prefiere jugar por la banda derecha.

En el inicio de campeonato, Bordalás optó por un 4-4-2, con Carlos Soler a la derecha y Denis Cherysev por la izquierda, reforzando el medio con un defensa como Hugo Guillamón. Con la lesión del ruso, Hugo Duro entro a escena por el flanco izquierdo y Soler abandonó el derecho para ir al medio, aspecto que favoreció a Hélder, ya que Jason (fichaje invernal del Deportivo Alavés) o Yunus Musah no han estado lúcidos.

 

Entre el 4-4-2 y el 4-1-4-1, el angoleño ha aprovechado la oportunidad con creces. Su velocidad, su gran asociación con Thierry Correia y especialmente, su sacrificio por el equipo en tareas defensivas han sido determinantes para que Bordalás haya cambiado de opinión. Además, en cada partido que pasa se le nota más liderazgo, siendo el único hombre puro de banda, ya que Hugo Duro desde la izquierda muchas veces acaba dentro del área. En definitva, está claro que el aficionado che quiere cada vez más a Hélder Costa. La duda es…¿Qué dirá Bordalás? Si su ‘año uno’ sigue en modo ascendente, él tendrá la última palabra.
