El FC Schalke 04, uno de los emblemas del fútbol alemán, se encuentra al borde de la desaparición y se ha convertido en uno de los peores equipos de Europa esta temporada.
Schalke y minería, juntos de la mano
La época dorada del conjunto del FC Schalke 04 coincide con la del esplendor de la minería. Al mismo tiempo, su popularidad también se vio acrecentada con la instauración del nazismo en Alemania en 1933. Desde ese año hasta el 1942, Los Mineros se colaron en nada menos que 14 finales nacionales, hito que les hizo convertirse en el equipo más popular del país.
A medida que el carbón entintaba la economía de Gelsenkirchen, los mineros del Schalke 04 continuaban picando en la mina del triunfo; allí donde los visitantes salían intoxicados y sin el mineral más preciado, la victoria, cada vez que descendían a Glückauf-Kampfbahn, galería primigenia del Schalke. Entre los 50 y 60 del siglo pasado, el sector minero del país teutón se vio afectado por una mayúscula crisis que desembocó en el cierre de casi la totalidad de las minas de la región. En los 80, solo cinco minas resistían en pie en Gelsenkirchen. Simultáneamente, el Schalke se sumergía en una depresión económica sin precedentes que le haría ausentarse de la Bundesliga tres veces en diez años.

Esto sí es una crisis: ¿El fin del Schalke?
Es frecuente hablar de crisis en el mundo del fútbol; en cuanto un equipo encadena una mala racha de de juego y resultados, los periódicos ya llenan sus hojas con esta fea palabra. Pero, ¿qué es realmente una crisis? El Schalke, con un par de ellas a sus espaldas te lo puede mostrar, y a su vez demostrar, que lo de tu equipo no es una crisis, sino un resbalón o un simple descuido.
En el 1998, se »derrumbaba» el último pozo minero en Gelsenkirchen. Schalke y ciudad, lejos de sollozar bajo los escombros de carbón, buscaron reinventarse. La defunción de la minería trajo consigo una profunda modernización del sector servicios en la Cuenca del Ruhr, y el arte y la cultura se erigieron como soportes principales de la economía local. Fue precisamente en el 98 cuando, a modo de tirita, el Veltins Arena (Arena AufSchalke en esos momentos) abría su telón.
Tras décadas de bienestar, la segunda de estas recesiones estaba al caer. El »Crack del 2020» comenzó en mayo, en aquel Derbi del Ruhr post-confinamiento en el que los mineros se llevaron un duro correctivo y en el que todo el planeta fútbol miraba a aquel césped en busca de recuperar la ilusión perdida. Antes de esta cita, en diciembre del 19, el Schalke era quinto con 30 puntos, y solo se encontraba a tres del que después fuera campeón, el Bayern de Múnich.
Si bien es cierto que los problemas económicos del Schalke ya asomaban la cabeza por aquel entonces, con unas deudas que rozaban los 200 millones de euros, la espléndida situación del equipo cegaba a los hinchas, inmersos en esa buena racha. Sin embargo, con la llegada de la pandemia y la vuelta a a los desangelados terrenos de juego, ese cebo en forma de buenos resultados se esfumó, saliendo todos los escándalos económicos a la luz.

¿Qué le espera al Schalke?
»El Schalke se encuentra en una encrucijada», declaraba Alexander Jobst, miembro del consejo de administración del club, hace solo unos meses. Este añadió que tras la dimisión de Clemens Tönnies, ex-presidente del equipo, deberían prepararse para realizar grandes ahorros y reconsiderar los objetivos deportivos. Este aviso fue emitido en verano, y ya hacía presagiar la hecatombe. Hoy, el FC Schalke 04 bate récords, aunque negativos; 9 puntos en 22 jornadas, tres victorias si juntamos Liga y Copa y un reconocimiento jamás antes alcanzado por la institución: ser el peor equipo del continente. Además, el runrún de la desaparición empieza a resonar por toda Europa.
David Wagner, el que fuera entrenador de los azules durante el descalabro, fue relevado por Manuel Baum en octubre, aunque de nada sirvió. Huub Estevens cogió el testigo, pero antes de aclimatarse, ya estaba haciendo las maletas. Con toda la fe del mundo llegó Christian Gross, que es el que ha conseguido los fugaces triunfos mencionados anteriormente.

Pues es muy probable que un hilo rojo no te una a nada ni a nadie, mas cuando la sangre minera corre por tus venas, no habrá aguja capaz de sacártela. La codependencia Schalke 04-hulla es infinita, y si uno se hunde, así lo hará el otro.
