En el año 2017 ponía fin a su paso por el Genk y abandonaba la Jupiler Pro League para dar un salto en su carrera. Llegaba a la Serie A para jugar en la Atalanta como reemplazo de Andrea Conti, que había fichado por el AC Milan. Un movimiento que encajaba a la perfección en el sistema de Gasperini por la forma de jugar del belga.
En su primera temporada a las órdenes del técnico italiano, demostró que La Dea no se había equivocado en ficharlo. Castagne realizó un gran año, donde demostró su enorme polivalencia.
Durante las siguientes, continuó teniendo una gran participación en el equipo de Bérgamo. En los tres años que estuvo en el equipo italiano superó siempre los 20 partidos, siendo su mejor temporada en cuanto a estadísticas la 2018/19. Ese año Castagne anotó 5 goles y repartió 4 asistencias.

Castagne aterriza de pie en la Premier con el Leicester
Con la lesión de Ricardo Pereira y la salida de Chilwell, el Leicester encontró una buena oportunidad para fichar a Castagne. Los foxes cerraban el acuerdo con la Atalanta por 24 millones de euros, adelantándose a otros grandes equipos como PSG y Tottenham que habían estado interesados en el belga. Con su llegada al equipo inglés, se unía a sus compatriotas Youri Tielemans y Dennis Praet, que al igual que Castagne han empezado esta Premier League ofreciendo un gran rendimiento.
Acostumbrado a ver a Castagne en una formación 3-4-1-2, era toda una incógnita el saber cómo encajaría en los planes de Brendan Rodgers. En el primer partido ante la ausencia del lesionado Pereira se colocó como lateral derecho. Su debut en la Premier League fue casi soñado. El Leicester consiguió ganar 3-0 al West Bromwich Albion y el propio Castagne anotaba su primer gol oficial en The Hawthorns.

Castagne ha sorprendido por su rápida adaptación al 4-1-4-1 de Bernard Rodgers, un estilo de juego muy directo que le favorece muchísimo. Y un estilo que la temporada pasada brindó grandes alegrías a la afición del Leicester, tras un año histórico en el que el equipo queda 5º en la clasificación y logra una plaza para la Europa League. Su irrupción está siendo fundamental para que el Leicester haya empezado con buen pie esta campaña, situándose cerca de puestos Champions. En sus primeros partidos ha completado el 80% de los pases realizados.
Al igual que la Atalanta con sus carrileros, el sistema de juego del Leicester beneficia muchos a sus laterales, ya que les permite poder subir al ataque y doblar a los extremos para crear más ocasiones. En esta faceta ofensiva la importancia de Castagne está dando al equipo mucha profundidad, y jugadores como Jamie Vardy o James Maddison lo están aprovechando.
¿Cómo juega Timothy Castagne?
La principal característica de Castagne es su gran despliegue en ataque. Tanto en la Atalanta como en el Leicester ha demostrado ser un amenaza cada vez que pisa área rival y llega línea de fondo para sacar algún pase o centro. Su gran arrancada desde campo propio le permite dar mucha velocidad a las transiciones ofensivas de su equipo, recorriendo la banda con profundidad y siendo muy difíciles de frenar sus avances. Además, su polivalencia le permite jugar por ambas bandas, tanto como lateral izquierdo, como lateral derecho, o incluso como carrilero (donde ya demostró un nivel excelso en la Atalanta).
Sin embargo, Castagne también cuenta con algunos aspectos no tan positivos, como es el defensivo. Su mayor dificultad es a la hora de defender en situaciones de uno contra uno, donde más de una vez es superado o regateado. Por esta razón, se ve beneficiado cuando el equipo juega con una defensa activa. A pesar de sus dificultades, Castagne está mejorando poco a poco este aspecto del juego, y las indicaciones del técnico Brendan Rodgers están teniendo mucho que ver.
Otro técnico que también está siendo clave en su desarrollo como futbolista es Roberto Martínez. El seleccionador de Bélgica, que normalmente lo sitúa como carrilero izquierdo, está siendo clave en el aspecto defensivo. Los «Red Devils» practican un juego de ataque, y por tanto la exigencia atrás es superior a la que tiene en el Leicester. Castagne ya es casi un fijo en la selección, y tiene muchas opciones de ser el titular en la próxima Eurocopa 2021.
