Athletic Club desde la cuna
Unai Simón, natural de Murguía (Álava), comenzó su etapa en el fútbol en el Aurrera de Vitoria. En 2011 llegaría al Athletic Club para seguir con su periodo formativo. Conforme fue avanzando entre las categorías inferiores, su nivel fue aumentando paulatinamente.
Tras su cesión al Basconia en 2014, volvió al Athletic para hacerse cargo de la portería del Bilbao Athletic, filial del club vasco. Unai fue una pieza fundamental de aquel equipo en Segunda B, incluso llegando a disputar el playoff de ascenso a La Liga SmartBank.
Una oportunidad inesperada para Unai
La historia de cómo llegó Unai Simón al primer equipo del Athletic Club, sin duda siempre será recordada por el guardameta.
Tras el gran nivel mostrado en el Bilbao Athletic, y ante la falta de sitio en el primer equipo, el club bilbaíno decidió ceder a Unai Simón al Elche en verano de 2018. El Athletic, que ya contaba con Kepa Arrizabalaga y con Iago Herrerín en la portería, no quería dejar sin minutos a un joven prometedor como Unai. Sin embargo, la situación dio un giro inesperado.
El 9 de agosto de 2018, el Chelsea pagó la cláusula de Kepa de 80 millones de euros, convirtiéndose en el portero más caro de la historia, superando a nombres como Alisson o Ederson.
Ante el fichaje repentino de su portero titular, el Athletic se encontraba a pocos días de comenzar La Liga con solo dos porteros en plantilla, Iago Herrerín y Alex Remiro. Una situación que obligó al equipo a tener que recuperar a Unai Simón, que había sido cedido al Elche 20 días antes. El portero vio como cambiaba su situación de no contar en el primer equipo, a tener una oportunidad como segundo portero, ante la falta de confianza de los técnicos en Remiro. Pese a que Herrerín partió como titular en gran parte de la temporada, Unai Simón consiguió debutar y llegar a disputar 16 partidos con el primer equipo.

Unai Simón, uno los grandes porteros de La Liga
Tras pasar una temporada de aprendizaje en el primer equipo, donde no contó con tantas oportunidades, Gaizka Garitano decidió apostar por él como primer portero. Y qué gran acierto tuvo el técnico de Vizcaya.
La temporada actual de Unai Simón ha sido la de su consagración como portero. El joven español se ha convertido, con tan solo 22 años (a unos días de los 23), en uno de los guardametas más decisivos de toda La Liga Santander. Un curso en el que ha conseguido dejar la portería a cero en 12 partidos. Una cifra al alcance de pocos arqueros de la competición española.
Su campaña comenzó de la mejor forma posible, dejando exhibiciones como la acontecida en la primera jornada de liga frente al F.C. Barcelona, donde consiguió dejar la portería a cero, y algunas paradas para el recuerdo. Actuaciones memorables, como la de aquel partido en la jornada 12 frente al Villarreal, donde realizó 7 paradas, incluyendo una a bocajarro a Gerard Moreno.

¿Futuro de la portería de la selección española?
El gran nivel de Unai Simón no pasa desapercibido en ningún sitio, y ya son muchos aficionados los que reclaman su convocatoria con la selección española. La portería de «La Roja» no pasa por un momento de esplendor, y podría ser una oportunidad para el de Murguía. A raíz de las dudas generadas con David De Gea tras su actuación en el Mundial 2018, y el momento convulso por el que atraviesa Kepa en el Chelsea, la figura de Unai Simón está tomando más fuerza. Pese a ello, tanto De Gea como Kepa son grandes porteros, y no es fácil hacerse un hueco ya desde un principio.
Sin embargo, la figura de Unai Simón en la selección ya viene de varios años atrás. El portero ha sido internacional con España en categorías inferiores, donde ha sido campeón del Europeo Sub-19 y el Europeo Sub-21. Quién sabe, quizá dentro de unos años podamos verlo con la elástica de la absoluta levantando trofeos, y siendo el titular en la portería.

Unai Simón es un portero de la escuela moderna. Precisamente coincide el gran auge de los porteros modernos con su etapa formativa, y por esa razón ha desarrollado muchas de esas características. Unai se caracteriza principalmente por ser un jugador con una enorme capacidad de reflejos. Su velocidad de reacción en situaciones límite han salvado al Athletic Club en más de una ocasión. Una capacidad que le permite detener disparos a bocajarro, disparos tras un rechace, tiros en el área pequeña…
Su altura (1,90), le permite ser un dominador en el juego aéreo, siendo capaz de atrapar muchos centros peligrosos al área. Además, como portero moderno, tiene un gran juego de pies, destacando principalmente sus potentes saques de puerta. Quizá, a veces sea un poco impetuoso y arriesgue demasiado, pero es un aspecto que muchos porteros suelen mejorar con la edad. Lo que sí podemos observar pese a su temprana edad, es que es un portero con cualidades para llegar a ser un referente del fútbol europeo, y el guardameta titular de una selección tan importante como la española.
