Pedro Díaz es uno de los últimos proyectos del Sporting de Gijón y está destacando con creces en La Liga Smartbank. El canterano está liderando a su equipo con tan solo 22 años y es uno de los responsables del gran momento del equipo asturiano. Seguramente pronto se le vea en La Liga Santander, ya sea de la mano del Sporting de David Gallego o en otro equipo.
Ilusionando desde Mareo hasta el Molinón
El futbolista asturiano es un producto de Mareo desde pequeño. El de Siero comienza a entrar en dinámica del filial en la 14/15, donde disputa 5 partidos en Segunda B en las últimas jornadas con 18 años.
Los minutos que disputa van creciendo de manera progresiva hasta que en la 17/18 termina de explotar con el Sporting B, lo que le permite debutar con el primer equipo en Copa del Rey ante el Reus. A partir de la temporada pasada se asienta en La Liga Smartbank y se convierte en un titular habitual en el centro del campo junto a Javi Fuego, ocupando el puesto dejado por Nacho Méndez, otro canterano que venía de hacerlo bien el curso anterior pero que había bajado el rendimiento.
A pesar del cambio de entrenador y la situación complicada que vivía el equipo, que aspiraba a más que la mitad de tabla con el regreso de canteranos como Manu García, Pedro Díaz es capaz de sobreponerse y ser una de las revelaciones del curso. Es cierto que el asturiano viene prometiendo mucho desde categorías inferiores y ya ha estado en alguna prelista de la selección española sub 21, pero su explosión definitiva se está produciendo ahora.

La campaña anterior Pedro Díaz era un centrocampista un tanto incompleto, como era normal por su corta edad. Sabía hacer muchas cosas pero casi ninguna de forma brillante, no destacaba en por nada especialmente. Lo que ha sorprendido más es que este curso ha dado el paso definitivo para convertirse no solo en el jugador referencia del Sporting de David Gallego, sino en uno de los mejores centrocampistas de La Liga Smartbank. De hecho, el Sporting ya trabaja en su renovación, ya que su contrato acaba en 2022.
Pedro Díaz tiene el talento en la sangre. Aunque no tiene una familia con pasado futbolístico como otros jugadores, su padre es José Díaz, un reconocido fotógrafo que estrenó un documental en Netflix llamado «100 días de soledad» en el que se puede ver brevemente al propio Pedro. Quizás por ello no le den vergüenza las cámaras y sea uno de los habituales en las ruedas de prensa del equipo, muestra también de su madera de capitán.

¿Cuál es su encaje en el Sporting en su lucha por el ascenso?
David Gallego suele apostar por un 4-2-3-1, donde Pedro Díaz puede ocupar dos posiciones. Lo más normal sería que jugara de acompañante del pivote como ya ha hecho en otras temporadas y donde tiene más margen de crecimiento, pero ante la ausencia de Manu García en algunos partidos o la irregularidad de los jugadores de banda, Pedro Díaz ha jugado en la mediapunta por detrás de Djuka, que con su agresividad en el desmarque le limpia muchas zonas cercanas al área para luego romper desde segunda línea.
Normalmente el español está acompañado de jugadores rápidos en banda o de enganches como Manu García, por lo que le da sentido al juego del equipo en posiciones interiores. El gran momento individual del asturiano también se refleja en el equipo de David Gallego, que está 5º, es decir, en play-off de ascenso.
¿Cómo juega Pedro Díaz?
Pedro Díaz es un centrocampistas total. No es solo un box to box, es mucho más completo. Su llegada al área se traduce más en asistencias (5) que en goles (1), lo que le ha llevado a convertirse en el máximo asistente del equipo, además de dar 1,3 pases clave por partido.
Con el balón es los pies no es un especialista a la hora de organizar, pero como buen centrocampista español, ha tenido una formación enfocada a eso y completa un 80% de los pases que intenta. Además es un futbolista muy inteligente en cualquier faceta del juego, tanto en defensa como en ataque, e incluso no es proclive a las tarjetas amarrillas, ya que tan solo le han sacado 3 este curso.
Es sacrificado en defensa y roba casi todos sus balones por anticipación o insistencia, no por ser un especialista, lo que muestra que de pivote se le desaprovecharía, aunque pueda jugar ahí de forma puntual. El canterano brilla más en el regate, ya que completa un 71% por partido, una de los mayores porcentajes de la categoría siendo centrocampista, aunque es cierto que solo promedia uno por partido, es decir, no es un futbolista enfocado continuamente al regate y al desborde aunque genere ventajas por dentro, ya sea en conducción o dejando a sus compañeros en posiciones favorables.
Pedro Díaz es el pianista del Sporting, todo el equipo va al son de su música, y si quieren seguir soñando deben de seguir dejándose llevar por el canterano. Pronto podrá verse su estreno en La Liga Santander, y David Gallego hará todo lo posible para que sea con el Sporting.
