16 de febrero de 1988, Albox (Almería). Nacía un pequeño genio del fútbol, un oasis en el desierto almeriense. Llegaba a la familia de los Capel Trinidad el pequeño Diego, uno de esos locos bajitos llamado a revolucionar el balompié español. Pronto comenzó a corretear las canchas de su Almería natal, dejando más que claro que el fútbol sería lo que le daría de comer durante el resto de su vida. De este modo, y con tan solo 12 años, llegó a una de las mejores canteras del país, a la Masía del FC Barcelona. Sin embargo, las prisas son malas consejeras, y el inmaduro Diego no fue capaz de aclimatarse a la Ciudad Condal. Con lágrimas en los ojos, y añorando su hogar día sí y día también, optó por regresar al »nido» antes incluso de concluir la temporada.
En su vuelta al Cabo de Gata, el almeriense se enfundó de nuevo la camiseta del Olula CF, su primer equipo, aunque no por mucho tiempo. A los pocos meses, le fichó el CD Oriente, del Barrio de los Ángeles, también en la ciudad de Almería. Su paso por este último fue muy efímero.
Su potente disparo y sus prodigiosas conducciones no pasarían inadvertidas, y una campaña más tarde el Sevilla FC se haría con sus servicios, llegando a abonar nada más y nada menos que 15.000 euros por el eléctrico Capel. 14 años y el rey de Andalucía se gastaba la »guita» en un chico infantil… Se venía algo grande; llegaba a Nervión un virtuoso de la pelota, el cual no tardaría en hacer vibrar al Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Un salto al vacío
»Ten cuidado con lo que deseas, porque se puede hacer realidad» dijo una vez el escritor Oscar Wilde. Seguramente uno de los deseos de Diego Capel desde que era un niño fuese convertirse en futbolista profesional, y de los buenos. En el 2004 comenzó a cumplirlo, cuando hizo su debut oficial con el Sevilla FC. Lo hizo como local, con Joaquín Caparrós como mentor, y sustituyendo al mítico Antonio López. Esos minutos sobre el césped de Nervión le sirvieron para convertirse en el segundo jugador más joven en debutar en la historia del Sevilla, siendo superado únicamente por el »ángel caído» José Antonio Reyes (16 años y 151 días).
De ahí en adelante, la proyección del atacante subió como la espuma: buenas actuaciones y títulos con el primer equipo, campeón de Europa con la selección sub-21, vinculaciones con clubes de la talla del Manchester United… ¡Incluso se le llegó a comparar con Leo Messi! Ese joven »rubito» era una de las sensaciones del deporte rey por aquel entonces, y todos lo sabían.
No obstante, y haciendo referencia a las palabras de Wilde, todo lo que el joven Diego había codiciado cuando era un chaval, se había hecho realidad. Y esto, más allá de ser una fantasía, estaba a punto de convertirse en una pesadilla. El rendimiento del »nuevo Messi» comenzó, sin motivo aparente, a caer en picado.

Sin graves lesiones, ni ninguna circunstancia personal aparente, »la alhaja almeriense» se fue resquebrajando paulatinamente. Por este motivo, se agotó su crédito en el Sevilla FC y en el año 2011 hizo las maletas hacia la Liga NOS, para enrolarse en las filas del Sporting de Portugal. Pese a no comenzar con mal pie en el país vecino, registrando 7 goles y 7 asistencias en su primer período, el fútbol de Diego Capel cada vez era más gris, y rápidamente cambió el terreno de juego por el banquillo. En el año 2014, apenas sumaba 5 partidos de titular de los 27 disputados por la escuadra lusa, por lo que fue traspasado.
El Genoa de Gian Piero Gasperini sería su nuevo hogar. En la Serie A, tampoco se reencontró a sí mismo, y sin apenas protagonismo emprendió un nuevo sendero, esta vez hacia Bélgica, con el fin de defender los colores del RSC Anderlecht. Pese a que La Primera División de Bélgica debería haber sido un reto sencillo para el español, este no fue capaz de sacar a relucir su zurda como antaño hacía en suelo español, y »Les Mauves et Blancs» pronto prescindieron del extremo.
En la temporada 18/19 vuelve a España, para competir en La Liga Smartbank y custodiar el escudo del Extremadura UD, donde se volvería a ver las caras con su amigo Reyes. En menos de diez años, el de Albox había pasado de ser la joya de la corona sevillista a ser un actor secundario en el plantel extremeño. Algo insólito e inexplicable, una incógnita para la que nadie tiene hoy reacción. Un suceso que algún día será analizado por Iker Jiménez como »El expediente Diego Capel».

Aunque se desconocía su paradero tras abandonar Almendralejo, los más eruditos de este deporte lograron localizarle tiempo antes de que el virus sacudiese el planeta.
