A los 17 años, un jovencísimo Joan Jordán procedente de Girona ingresaba en las filas del Espanyol para desarrollarse como futbolista en la cantera del equipo. Destacó en Segunda División B en la 12/13 y 13/14 donde disputó bastantes partidos de forma regular siendo importante.
A pesar de contar con muchos minutos en las categorías inferiores, no convencía a los entrenadores del primer equipo por aquel entonces, algo que se demuestra en los números: 17 partidos en 7 temporadas. Este hecho propició su primera salida al Valladolid en forma de cesión.
Su primera toma de contacto con el fútbol profesional en Segunda División no fue nada mal ya que, a las órdenes de Paco Herrera, contó con 35 partidos, aportando 3 goles y 3 asistencias y acumulando un total de 3142 minutos, siendo el tercer jugador con más minutos de la plantilla.
Tras esa buena temporada, fue rechazado por el Espanyol, y el Eibar se hizo con el gato al agua fichando al catalán por 1 millón de euros, una incorporación de categoría para las filas de Mendilibar.

Mostrando un despliegue impresionante impropio de un futbolista recién llegado a la máxima categoría del fútbol español, Joan Jordán disfrutaba en el terreno de juego, se sentía libre y manejaba el juego del equipo. Acompañado de Dani García en el pivote, el catalán estaba liberado y se asomaba por zonas ofensivas, filtrando pases, marcando o poniendo centros. Además, era el especialista a balón parado y pateaba todas las faltas o córners del equipo.

Con la llegada de Julen Lopetegui al conjunto hispalense en la temporada 19/20, Joan Jordán tuvo un impacto y crecimiento brutal gracias al esquema que empleaba el técnico. Acompañado de un pivote (Fernando) y otro interior (Banega hasta su marcha), el catalán maduró como futbolista de manera exponencial, potenciando los recursos que ya ofrecía en el Eibar.
El Sevilla es sinónimo de éxito en España, pero sobre todo, en la Europa League. Después de conquistar el trofeo por última vez en la 15/16,el conjunto hispalense estaba dispuesto a conseguirlo de nuevo por la grandiosa plantilla que tenía.
